carnelian, a name thought to come from the latin for the cornel cherry, is a translucent chalcedony, a fine-grained quartz, warmed from orange to deep red by iron. it is one of the oldest stones in jewellery: beads cut in the indus valley reached mesopotamia more than four thousand years ago, and roman signet rings were carved from it, as hot wax lifts cleanly from its surface. it has long been worn for courage and vitality.
