chalcedony is quartz in its quietest form, made of crystals too fine to see, which gives it a waxy glow and a milky translucence. its name is thought to come from chalcedon, an ancient greek town on the bosphorus that is now part of istanbul. carnelian, onyx and agate all belong to the same family. in its blue and grey tones it has long been worn as a stone of calm and gentle speech.
