tourmaline comes in more colours than almost any other gemstone, sometimes several in one crystal, and its name is thought to come from the sinhalese turmali, mixed stones. dutch traders brought it from sri lanka in the 1700s and found that, when warmed, it pulled ash from their pipes, so they called it aschentrekker, the ash puller. pink tourmaline is traditionally a stone of love and gentleness.
