mother of pearl is named for the shells in which pearls form. it is nacre, built by the mollusc layer by thin layer from the same material as a pearl, and its glow comes from those layers: light passes into them and returns as soft, shifting colour. it has been carved and inlaid for thousands of years, and is traditionally linked with calm, the moon and the sea.
