onyx takes its name from the greek for fingernail, after a story in which eros trimmed the nails of a sleeping aphrodite and the fates turned the clippings to stone. it is a chalcedony, and in antiquity its layers were carved into cameos and seals. black onyx has long been worn as a stone of strength and protection.
