named for its likeness to a tiger's eye, tiger eye is quartz that grew into the fibres of another mineral and kept their shape. those fine fibres catch the light in a moving, silky band, an effect called chatoyance, after the french for a cat's eye. most of it comes from the northern cape of south africa. roman soldiers are said to have carried it for courage, and it is still worn as a stone of focus and steadiness.
