rhodochrosite takes its name from the greek rhodon, rose, and chroma, colour. its pink comes from manganese, and in a polished stone it often shows paler bands, like the inside of a shell. in argentina it is called rosa del inca, the inca rose, after the andean mines where the inca are said to have found it, and it is the country's national stone. it has long been a stone of love and tenderness. a soft stone, it asks to be worn with a little care.
